USSR--Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was created following the communist revolution in Russia.
Russia belonged to the new country of the USSR from 1922 to the collapse in 1991. It is this state that will enter into World War II and be engaged in the Cold War with the US until its collapse in 1991. Following the collapse, many regions of the USSR broke into independent countries and Russia became Russia once again.
