Mongols never managed to take the Mekong delta in the first place. There were three invasions of Vietnam by the mongols and in all three they were defeated, gradually losing even more until being completely destroyed by the Vietnamese who knew the land and used ti to their advantage. At first they were only repulsed, while in the end they suffered complete destruction.
