Let's call the cat "c"

then the dog will simply be 8c in terms of weight .

and c+8c=54, since both weight 54 together

so 9c=54,

and c=5 (dividing both by 6)

and the dog was 8*c=8*6=48

so the dog weights 47 pounds!
