u have to line ur decimals up....and every whole number has a decimal following the last digit.
40 = 40.0

so line the decimals up...and once the decimals are lined up, any empty spaces, u can put a 0...if it is easier....let me show u

   40.0
   03.4
 ---------add
   43.4
