Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. 

When they do, we call that "onomatopeia".

But most often they don't.  For example, "strawberry" is much too big a word
for that tiny red fruit.  It should be called a "pleep".

And "sun" is much too small a word for that huge hot yellow thing in the sky.
That should be called a "fuuuarrmmhh".
