Translations, reflections, and rotations are known as rigid transformations because they keep the same size and shape of the figure. All we're doing is moving the figure around. It hasn't changed. Therefore, distance between points is preserved.

In contrast, a dilation will enlarge or shrink the figure, which will not preserve distance. Enlarging will grow the distance. Shrinking will reduce the distance.
