The answer is meal.

 During the religious pilgrimage to the cathedral of Cantebury, the pilgrims are challanged to participate in tale-telling contest. This idea was a suggestion given by the host of the Tabard Inn. Each pilgrim was supposed to tell a story, and upon their return, the teller of the best tale would have a free meal at the tavern.
