What do you think of atticus's reaction to bob ewell's challenge? should he have ignored bob, retaliated or done something else?

Atticus is always the bigger level headed man. While reading the book, I came to expect that from him. I do think he should have taken ewell more seriously. Ultimately, ewell came after his family. If not for Boo Radley, he could have killed the children.
