Let Mercado's age be m and his daughter's age be d.

Our first equation: m = 37

Our second equation: m = 5 + 4d

Substitute 37 for m
37 = 5 + 4d

Subtract 5 from both sides
32 = 4d

Divide both sides by 4
8 = d

His daughter is 8 years old.
