The Fatimids were Shi'ite Muslims. Muslim territory was governed by the caliph, a new religious leader after Mohamed's death. The caliphs had religious and political power. They provided peace and stability to the people of the empire. Bagdad was its capital. By 909, a Shi'ite caliphate, the Fatimids,  ruled Egypt until 1171.
