Abolitionist was a name used to describe people across the world who were proponents for the abolition of slavery and emancipation of slaves during the  heights of slavery in the 17th to 19th centuries. In America, they were significant in the American Civil War since one of the main issues for the war was the abolition of slavery by the Southern States of the US.
