2y+7y=-20
You first add common numbers/variables
So you add 2y to 7y=9y
9y=-20
You divide -20 by 9y=-2[tex] \frac{2}{9} [/tex]
y=2[tex] \frac{2}{9} [/tex]

2y + 7y = -20            :First combine like terms (2y and 7y)

9y = -20                    :Then, divide the whole equation by 9

y = -2.22

or

y = -22/10

or

y = -11/5

or

y = -2  1/5
