During the mid-1500, the Spanish conquered the northern part of South America (also known as the Tropical North). This area comprised what today is Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama, a northern part of Brazil, and part of the Guianas. The Spanish immediately established local governments, so they could control the surrounded lands and its people.
