In the late 1800s, why did industrialists support the gold standard?

Many industrialists supported the gold standard in the late 1800s because: The gold standard kept the price of gold fixed, which kept both prices and wages down.

By doing this, industrialists manage to maintain their profit ratio since they spend little expense for worker's salary. But many of them at that time did not realize that the only way for gold standard to be successful is if the country imposed a very  tight conditions on money and credit.
